Question for teachers out there

When is someone grown? Is it when they pay their own rent? When they stop acting like a fool? When are my students grown? They are in this weird limbo of being exposed to too much violence, poverty, and not motivating events. But those events make them think that they are grown, when they still act like children for so much of their time. How do they define grown? They want to be grown and have the freedoms that come along with that, but then they still except us to give them the liberties of a child and take advantage of that leniency. So…should I treat them as adults or children? Or, the alternative, how do I treat them as teenagers?
