So, I didn't keep my promise of writing more often and updating. Oh well. The best laid plans and all.
A couple of funny things have happened:
1) One of my students does not believe that the sun is a star. "NO! It's a SUN!" I also get the impression that he did not know the earth was not the center of the universe until I drew the galaxy for him. It was laughably funny the conversation that I had with him, but fortunately I did not succumb to that urge. He didn't believe me until I got out an encyclopedia and even now I'm not sure he is convinced.
2) One social studies teacher in the building thought that Britain didn't have a democracy. "But, they have a monarchy. They have a queen!"
3) “Babies are in there for nine months, right? Why?...Man, if babies were in there for like 3 months, us n*****s would be f’ed up!”
4) One student asked me today if he would have some make-up work. This was the 6th time all quarter I had seen this child and the most that I've ever heard him talk. Make-up work!!! Bwahahahahaha! I asked him gently and without laughing why he thought that I should care about him passing the class when his actions told me that he didn't care. I think he got the point.
I'm being formally evaluated tomorrow by my principal. Blech.
I cannot WAIT for break to begin after school on Friday. I really just want to relax and not think about children for a while. I do want to lesson plan though, which is odd. I don't think that I'll have much time to, though, because I'll be in Chicago from the 23rd to the 31st and then I have training on the 2nd-4th. Booo. It's really too bad. I need space to work and spread out and time to do those things. I'm not taking any work with me to Chicago, so I really can't do anything or much there.
I will be hanging out with Lisa for a couple days and perhaps Mary if I'm lucky. Tim and Lisa and a couple other people and I are going to my favorite restaurant on the 30th. Wheeeeee! I get to babysit Alex on the 26th, which will be fun. And I'll be able to sleep as much as I gosh-darned well please.
Laura and I ordered a bit of dinner tonight--cheap Mickey-like burgers--and watched Sense and Sensibility. I haven't watched that movie in a long time! It is so good. And I like hanging out with Laura.
Time for calling parents.
